The Farm is equipped with an electronic system for convenient connection to
monitoring instruments. A video monitoring system permits real-time and
time-lapse animal behavior studies, which are crucial to the success of
livestock equipment. All operations can be monitored remotely from engineering
offices at Osborne.
In addition to the full range of Osborne conventional equipment, the EARS
system includes TEAM™ electronic sow feeding (ESF), TEAM electronic estrus
detection (EED), TEAM electronic farrowing management (EFM), electronic
weighing, electronic marking, paperless data recording (e-LOG™), and
electronic performance testing (FIRE®). The environment in the Farm
is maintained by Agri-Aide® ventilation systems and Climate
Commander™ , an interactive climate-control program.

Although
the Farm design is basic state-of-the-art construction, it is divided into two
separate operating systems, one using conventional methods and the other, EARS™
methods. The two systems are separated by a central passageway that divides the
production buildings. Results from the two systems can be directly compared.
